What do the great “captains” of business, finance and industry have in common with the great captains of sailing ships?
They know how to get the best from their people.
How do they do this? You might think that a ship’s captain will rely on the strength of their personality to keep their crew engaged by powerful command. Many do, but the best don’t.
Because leader-dependence is not good for performance.
I am a Tall Ship officer and leadership coach with more than 20 years experience of leadership and workforce engagement at sea and ashore. Through my training, coaching and keynote speaking, I am a professional ally in my clients’ ongoing task of bringing out the best in the people they work with.
I have learned that I can engage people more completely when I treat them as complete people, with a bigger view than my immediate need for their work. This approach creates extraordinary performance, and helps people feel good about going to work.
In 1994 I founded the adventure voyaging program the Nova Scotia Sea School, and was awarded the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal for the Sea School’s contribution to Canadian Society.
I hold a Masters degree from Harvard University, and serve on the faculty of the ALIA Institute for Authentic Leadership in Action. I am a national member of the Canadian Association of Professional Speakers.
My work also draws on more than 25 years of teaching meditation and mindfulness practices. I have a strong allegiance to the power that comes from developing confidence and personal authenticity, and I help my clients strengthen these qualities in their lives and work.

“The bad leader is hated and feared.
The good leader is loved and praised.
The great leader, when their work is done,
The people say, “We did this ourselves.”“
